WHAT DOES THE PROJECT PRETEND?
Design a participatory fire prevention strategy based on agricultural, livestock and forestry activities that gradually recover a diverse landscape, inhabited and with less risk: a landscape in mosaic.
WHERE DO WE WORK?
In the area of high risk of fires of Sierra de Gata (19 municipalities) and Las Hurdes (5 municipalities), with an area of 1700 square kilometers. Within this area the forest and scrubland occupy 81,000 hectares, which have been heavily affected by large fires since 2003.
WHAT’S NEW ABOUT IT?
Large fires occur because the vegetation that acts as fuel occupies enormous continuous extensions that must be fragmented to reduce the risk. Conventional prevention tools (firebreaks and preventive silviculture) are insufficient, so it is necessary to resort, in addition, to agro-silvo-pastoral uses that act as productive and persistent firebreaks.
WHY IS YOUR IMPLICATION IMPERATIVE?
Agrarian practices are a crucial tool in prevention, so their decline increases the risk of fires significantly. Therefore, any action in favor of agriculture, livestock and forestry developed by the population will help to eliminate fuel and prevent large fires, especially if they are developed in areas strategically located as a barrier against fire.
HOW WE WORK?
We intend to stimulate, advise and consolidate small or large initiatives that generate productive firebreaks, understood as portions of the territory with cultivation, grazing or extraction of forest products. The project staff will hold informative sessions, will serve as a bridge with local and regional institutions, and will manage working networks so that the voice of local entrepreneurs is taken into account and to overcome bureaucratic barriers that limit the development of projects.
IF YOU HAVE AN IDEA IN CONSONANCE WITH THE PROJECT, HOW CAN YOU CARRY IT OUT?
If you use the internet, please let us know your idea as soon as possible through this website by clicking here. For non-Internet users, a mailbox is available in each municipality where you can deposit the personal data and the objective of your project so that we can contact you and help you if the proposal is in accordance with the purposes of the Mosaic. If yes, we will register you as an associate to the project and we will start working with you.
WHAT ARE THE CAUCES FOR PARTICIPATION?
Whether or not you have a specific project, your opinion and your proposals will be collected in personal surveys, information sessions and workshops on specific topics. In addition, monthly training sessions will be held by expert professionals. The calendar for all these events can be found here.
WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES DOES THE PROJECT DEVELOP?
The Mosaico team is made up of expert personnel who must serve as a bridge between the public and private agents that make up the social network of the territory. To the extent that it deals with issues that may affect the risk of fire, we are present in the following areas:
- Advice to local entities on proposals and projects. More information.
- Permanent collaboration with local associations in related tasks. More information.
- Design of post-fire restoration plans. More information.
- Regional offices of attention in agroforestry matter. More information.
- Advice on the development of peri-urban fire prevention plans. More information.
- Dissemination of the project in technical and scientific forums. More information.
